The Florida Black Dance Artist Organization's (FBDAO) annual symposium, aptly titled "Moving Forward: Embodied and Dialogic Explorations in Dance and Culture," is an eagerly anticipated event in the world of dance. This year, the symposium assumes even greater significance in light of the ongoing challenges faced by Black dancers, artists, choreographers, scholars, and educators in the face of

state-sanctioned suppression and marginalization in the state of Florida. The symposium will serve as a platform to center Black dance and African Diasporic dance culture and traditions.

Dr. L’Antoinette Stines

Dr. L’Antoinette Stines is a Jamaican dancer, choreographer, actress, teacher/lecturer, administrator, author and visionary. She received her Cultural Studies focused PhD from the University of the West Indies. She is the Creator of the only Anglo-Caribbean Carimod Contemporary Caribbean Dance Technique, L’Antech. L’Antech is examinable and codified and is currently one of the dance techniques included in the CXC Performing Arts Syllabi at both the CSEC and CAPE level.

Dr. Stines is regarded as an expert in popular and folkloric Jamaican dance and the development of contemporary dance technical procedures. She has artistically and academically impacted on the direction and future of Caribbean dance largely due to her varied education and performing history, which ranges from classical ballet to Yoruba “Orisha” dance. Her dance career began in Jamaica with Alma Mock Yen and continued in the US with the Martha Graham School, Pepsi Bethel Authentic Jazz Dance Company and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Dr.Stines in her role as Artistic Director and founder of L’ACADCO: A United Caribbean Dance Force, has lead the company on tours to Japan, China, Africa, Spain, France, Holland, UK, USA, Barbados, Haiti, Suriname, and Cuba to name a few. She has lectured in Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, and North and South America. She has trained Artistes, choreographed music videos, films and plays.

Using L’ACADCO as her canvas, Dr. Stines’ choreographic work is inspired by the versatility of her island’s culture and ancestry, the sensuality of its people and the natural mystic in the air. She is also the recipient of many awards, most recently, the prestigious Musgrave Award. Her next steps will include choreographing an opera called “Imoinda” in the United States, hosting Jamaica Dance Experience (JADE) conference in 2025 and launching The L’Antoinette Performing Arts Akadamie (LAPAA).
